Orchid Island

Orchid Island is beautiful in Taitung, but it is very different with Taiwan. Orchid Island is made up of hills and rocky coastline. The weather is hot much of the year, and typhoons hit the island regularly.

Fishing plays a major role in the diet of the Tao, and it also plays a big part in their traditions. In particular, flying fish have an important place in the tribe’s history. Since burial grounds are close to the seashore, local people rarely go near the beach. This has helped to protect plants and animals along the coast.

More and more, young people are going to Taiwan’s cities to look for work, and more and more, customs are being forgotten. But for the moment, Orchid Island and its people remain, peacefully.

When you stay up all night

It isn't good to stay up all night to study or cram. When you do that, you don't actually remember much. And it's easy to get anxious when you're tired. According to my experience, it makes me hard to think and make decisions. Maybe that's why I'm having more trouble taking tests.

All nighters not only affect your mind, but your body, too. They have no energy and often get headaches. I have some tips studying from book that it can let you get back on track. First, you need a study schedule and set deadlines for yourself. When you receive an assignment, finish it before you get distracted. That means occasionally missing your favoreite TV show. Another thing: your diet's really important. It isn't good to eat so much sugar. You can get more from oatmeal or fruit.

Finally, I think you should go study while it's still early.

The Poison Month

Ancient Chinese people considered May on the lunar calendar a very dangerous month. May was also called "the poison month." This is usually the time of the year when the weather starts to get hot and humid.

Harmful insects and rats run around spread diseases, and people die because of inadequate medical treatment. Today, parents still make sachets and fill them with powders of two plants, calamus, Chinese mugwort, and Realgar. Children wear them on their neck to prevent sickness and death. People also dring Shiung Huang wine for the same reasons.

If I were a gardener

If I were a gardener, I will devote my entire life to something so small as seeds. I just want to grow flowers which will show the entire world how wonderful Taiwan is.
I think I won’t get sick as long as work in this field. I can see many flowers every day and have good mood.

I’d like to build a research garden and put some effort into seeds. Garden without seeds is like ice cream without sugar. There is no flavor. I hope my accomplishments in garden breeding are among the top in the world. I can cultivate more than eight hundred kinds of seeds in my garden. I do what I want to do to the best of my ability, that’s it. Even though the profit for research and development of seeds is low, each seed is a hope, because one day each of these seeds will grow into flowers that people can see.

Perhaps I do not have the high aspirations and ideals to change the world, but if I do my job the best I can, working hard every second of my life, I will be happy. I think people who love and respect their work are all the happiest in the world.

The silly things people get upset

Unless you are a saint, you have caused at least one stupid disagreement with a friend, loved one, or colleague. Didn’t you feel like a real dolt afterwards? Or the interactions that you regret the most in your life have almost all happened when you felt tired, unhappy, or under pressure.

In the past, my outburst was really unwarranted and now I feel like an idiot. When I was helping my daughter with her Chinese homework about two years ago and she just wasn’t know how to write the words well. I felt very frustrated. I am not a patient person by nature if there’s one virtue every parent should have, it is patience.

Have you feel very guilty about your behavior. How did you clear your conscience? I’d like to become the mature one. It takes a lot of maturity to reflect on one’s behavior and admit where one has gone wrong like we’re dong. Tomorrow’s a new day.

The History and Story of Mother’s Day

In ancient Greece, people held spring celebrations in honor of Rhea,
the mother of the gods. In the 17th century, England celebrated Mothering Sunday on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40th weekday before Easter) to honor mothers. It was said that many poor families sent their kids to live with rich families to work for them. These young servants returned home on Mothering Sunday to stay with their mother. They brought Mothering Cake and gifts for their mother.

A well-known story about Mother’s Day comes from the U.S.A. In 1907, Ana Jarvis from Philadelphia persuaded her mother’s church in West Virginia to celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May, the day that coincided with the date of her mother’s death 2 years before.

Then, people started celebrating Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May. Mother’s Day comforted the women who lost their husband or sons during
World War I. Mother’s Day was celebrated in almost every state by 1911. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson and Congress proclaimed Mother’s Day a nation holiday.

How to celebrate Mother's Day

On Mother's Day, people usually get togerther. Dads and kids make three meals and do the housework. They prepare mother's favorite food in the kitchen.

Most kids make a Mother's Day card for their mother. Some of them write a love letter to their mother and leave i t on her pillow. Also, kids make special gifts for their mom themselves.

One good idea is to prepare a vase with a carnation in it. Put it on the table. Place a card with touching words next to the vase.

Nowadays, many families take Mom out for dinner. The most important thing is to let your mom relax and have a wonderful day.

Easter Eggs

Of all the symbols associated with Easter, the egg- a symblol of fertility and new life-is the most indentifiable. Originally Easter eggs were painted with bright colors and were used in Easter egg rolling contests or given as gifts.
Eggs were usually exchanged between lovers and friends.

Various cultures have developed their own ways of decorating Easter eggs. In Greece, crimson honors the blood of Christ. In parts of Germany and Austria, green eggs are used. Slavic people decorate their eggs in special patterns of gold and silver.

Today children hunt colored eggs and place them in Easter baskets along with modern versions of real Easter eggs-those made of plastic or chocolate candy. But no matter how traditions or customs evolved, eggs are a reminder of the Resurrection of Christ.

My best friend

I have many friends, Mandy Wu is the best of mine. We have known each other since we were in junior high school. She is very pretty and has short hair. She is not very tall but she was quite slim when she was young. She always likes to dress up until now. We are interested in many of the same hobbies. We both enjoy music, cooking and biking. We like going to the cinema. Whatever we're doing, it's always fun to be with her.

We always chatting each other and laughing at something. She has a very nice personality and a wonderful sense of humor but she got a little depressed from time to time in junior high school. Due to her father addicted in gambling and forgot about his work. Her father became greedy and wanted to win more. As a result, his daily life was ruined and he got the debt. My friend, Mandy had to give up his study of college at that time and went to work for families of living. I admired his brave and independent. After she and her brother earned the enough money to pay his father’s debt, she returned to school to complete his study.

When I was in troubles, I was frustrated by repeated failures, she still patiently encouraged me. I appreciated what she had done for me. We are best friends now, and I believe we'll still be best friends in the future!

Slumdog Millionaire

In this winter vacation, I saw a good movie from Indian. This movie narrated that stems from the Indian slum youth, Jamal, he attends the television program to guess a riddle. Finally, he holds the big prize. Through Jamal narrated story of his own childhood that gives all audiences on a real curriculum.

How hasn't ever received the education who poor child be able to guess right all questions? Some people have the question to the Jamal’s honest conduct. Arrested by police under suspicion of cheating, Jamal is interrogated by the authorities. The police simply can't believe that a common "slumdog" could possibly possess the knowledge to get this far in the game, and in order to convince them of how he gained such knowledge, Jamal begins reflecting back on his childhood.

All in all, I think that Jamal is a lucky child. He obtains not only the question of explanation, but also gets trusts with relationship of brothers and love. This movie deserve us seeing, it reflects the questions of poverty's society and a young man how to gain his want.

Chinese New Year

The date of the Chinese New Year is determined by the lunar calendar rather than the western calendar. It falls on a day ranging from late January to mid-February. We prepared for New Year, families clean out houses, wash all the household utensils, and throw away unwanted items. Two days before Chinese New Year, we hold a thanksgiving ceremony in honor of Heaven. Chicken, pork, fish, sticky rice cake and fruit and some of the items offered.

On New Year’s Eve, our members of every family returns home to have a family reunion dinner. There are a lot of special foods served, such as hot pot, dumplings and fish. After the dinner, children receive red envelopes containing gifts of lucky money. We stayed awake as long as we can during the night because it is believed that the longer the children stay awake, the longer their parents live. On New Year’s Day, after midnight, firecrackers are set off to “scare away” evil spirits.

On the first day of the Chinese New Year, we didn’t cook or eat any meat because we believe that this will ensure a happy and long life. We visited neighbors and friends. When we met, we said “Gong Xi Fa Chai,” each other to wish a happy new year.
